The Marrakesh Treaty adopted on June 27th, 2013, will bind the Republic of Malawi as of October 14th, 2017.
The Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has already presented his compliments to the Government of the Republic of Malawi on the deposit of its instrument of accession to the Treaty finalized on July 14th, 2017.
This treaty is aimed to facilitate access to people who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print disabled, forming part of the body of international copyright treaties administered by WIPO. It has a clear humanitarian and social development dimension and its main goal is to create a set of mandatory limitations or exceptions to copyright laws for the benefit of aforementioned people.
This is step taken by this Southeast African country towards equal opportunities for people with disabilities in the field of Intellectual Property.
