On December 4, Samoa’s Government deposited its instrument of accession to join the Madrid Protocol with WIPO’s Director General, Francis Gurry.
Samoa is the 103rd member of the Madrid System, which now covers 119 countries. The Protocol will enter into force for on March 4, 2019, date from which local brand owners will be able to start using the Madrid System to protect their marks, in the 118 covered territories, by filing a single international application and paying a single set of fees.
Current owners of international registrations will be able to request a subsequent designation of Samoa should they wish that their trademarks are also protected in Samoa.
