Registered Community Design (RCD)
Automatic protection across all 27 EU Member States, with only one application
The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) is located in Alicante, Spain and was created in 1994 as a decentralized Agency of the European Union to grant European Intellectual Property rights. EUIPO acts mainly in the registration of European Union Trademarks and Community Designs, which automatically provide Intellectual Property rights in all EU member-states.
Taking into account that it is only necessary to file one application for EU-wide Intellectual Property protection, this regional route is especially useful for applicants of trademarks or designs that seek protection in some or all common countries of the EU, with reduced bureaucracy and costs. EUIPO does not grant patents, which should be sought through the European Patent Organization (EPO).
On January 31st, 2020, the United Kingdom has left the European Union. Learn more about the impact of Brexit on Registered Community Design.
