Cape Verde joins new WIPO treaties

Following the approved accession of Cape Verde to the Lusaka Agreement (ARIPO), the country now joins four key WIPO treaties: Madrid Protocol, Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement and Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.

With great expectation, these treaties will boost the rights of creators in Cabo Verde. The country continues to take important steps to support the development of its creative industries, including more efficient and cost-effective ways to ensure national and international protection for its products. These treaties will enter into force on July 6, 2022.
 

Madrid Protocol

On April 6, 2022, the Government of Cape Verde deposited its instrument of accession to the Madrid Protocol, becoming the 112th member of the Madrid System, which now covers a total of 128 countries.
 

Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)

On April 6, 2022, the Government of Cape Verde deposited its instruments of accession to both Paris Convention and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). The accession of Cape Verde to the PCT will make it the 156th member of the PCT Union.

Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement

On April 6, 2022, the Government of Cabo Verde deposited its instrument of accession to the Geneva Act of the Lisbon Agreement on Appellations of Origin and Geographical Indications. Cabo Verde is now the 38th member of the Lisbon System.

Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property

The Paris Convention created a Union for the protection of Industrial Property rights and established the priority right among member States. It is the first and oldest global treaty on Intellectual Property and it was a vital measure taken to help creators ensure that their intellectual works were protected in other countries.
