Libya: Commercial Registry Resumes Electronic Trademark Publications

Libya

The Commercial Registry Department in Libya has officially resumed the electronic publication of trademarks through its official website, following a period of temporary suspension.

A substantial batch of approximately 500 trademarks, encompassing publication numbers 55261 to 57597, is now available for public inspection. The database can be accessed directly via the Commercial Registry Authority Trademark Portal. At present, the portal's search functionality is limited to queries by trademark name, as further technical updates and system enhancements remain underway.

Statutory Deadlines and Regulatory Framework
In accordance with the applicable intellectual property legislation in Libya, the statutory opposition period for all newly published trademarks is strictly 30 days from the official date of publication. Due to this limited timeframe, rights holders are advised to review the relevant numbers promptly to evaluate potential conflicts.

While this resumption represents a positive development, certain administrative uncertainties persist:

  • Publication Mechanism: The official procedure and schedule for subsequent publication batches have not yet been clarified by the authorities;
  • Pending Backlog and Renewals: A formal response is still awaited from the Commercial Registry Department regarding previously filed applications that remain unpublished, particularly those that have either entered the renewal stage or are fast approaching their renewal deadlines.
